New Testament proof:
In the gospels we get a glimpse of how sin brings a curse upon a person. We can see that some diseases and infirmities are a direct result of sin (curse). Repentance/forgiveness is necessary for healing and deliverance.
The Israelites understood the consequences of sin resulting in a curse. John 9:2 “And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? The reason his disciples asked Jesus who did sin, that he was born blind, is because blindness was an outward manifestation (a curse) of an inward condition (sin) evident in his family lineage.
In Matthew 9:2 Jesus said to the man with the palsy, “Thy sins be forgiven thee.” Then Jesus said to the man with the palsy, “Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house (Matt. 9:6).”
In John 5:5 A certain man which had an infirmity thirty-eight years laid by the pool of Bethesda. Jesus told the impotent man to rise up and walk in Matt. 5:8 and in verse 14 Jesus finds the man in the temple, and said unto him, “Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.”
We see by these examples that the infirmity was a direct result of sin. In Deuteronomy 28 Moses gives comprehensive lists of the blessings and curses. The blessings are listed in verses 3 through 13, the curses in verses 16 through 68.
In Exodus 34:7 states that the Lord forgives iniquity and transgression and sin. God also makes it clear that the iniquities of the fathers are passed from children to the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.
Two important features are common to blessings and curses.
First, their effect is not limited to the individual. It may extend to families, communities, or whole nation.
Second, they tend to continue from generation to generation until something happens to cancel their effects.
In Exodus 20:15 when God appeared on Mt. Sinai to give Moses the commandments, we read that breaking the first two commandments will bring a curse.
1). Idolatry (false Gods) Verse 3 says, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
2). Graven image Verse 4 says, “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in earth beneath…”
This is very important for parents who have adopted children from other countries. Do you know anything about the faith and medical history of their biological parents? If the parents where worshiping a false gods, then they and their children are under a generational curse.
I remember a story where a minister told me of a couple who had adopted three beautiful Asian children. The youngest boy was severely cross-eyed. Upon ministering with this boy, and cancelling the generational curse, a remarkable thing happened, this child’s eyes straightened out.
In Exodus 20:5 He says, “For I the Lord thy God is a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;”
In Deuteronomy 27:15-26 Moses list the sins, which provoke God’s curse. In Deuteronomy 28 Moses gives a comprehensive list of the blessings and curses. The blessings are listed in verses 3 through 13, the curses in verses 16 through 68.
The two alternatives that were presented to Israelites, on Mt. Ebal and Gerizim, the alternatives being the blessings and curses are also presented to Christians. They apply equally to all who have entered into a covenant relationship with God.
Under the New Covenant, just as under the Old, God still offers us two alternatives; either blessing for obedience or curse for disobedience, there is no third alternative.
The twelve sins that come with curses which was pronounced on the Israelites from Mount Ebal, can be categorized into these areas of moral and ethnical conduct:
Idolatry: Acknowledging and worshiping false gods (Exodus 20:3-5).When we think of idol worship or false gods we tend to see this as something that occurs in foreign countries. However, in western civilization anything that takes the place of God is your god or idol. These things can be our career, loved one, materialism, power, etc. If you don’t have time for God, time for church, time to pray, or time to read your bible, then what is consuming your time?
Graven image (Deuteronomy 27:15) Graven images man made carved, likeness of a person, animal or creation (sun, moon etc) and you bow down and worshipped it.This does not include your prize collection of angels, or dolls, unless you are worshipping them. However, this does include statues or images of other saints that people tend to bow down and pray to, along with a host of other graven images.
Occult/witchcraft (Deuteronomy 27:15) The Latin word for occult means hidden or secret. When we think of the occult or witch craft we may envision witches brewing a pot of some concoction, chanting curses, or a person with a doll that looks like a mini me, poking a sharp needle in it and chanting voodoo curses. However, it doesn’t take much to open a door to the occult, a séance at a party, a game with a Ouija Board, chanting in the dark Blood Mary into a mirror because of a dare from friends, levitating a person at camp Tilicki, being hypnotized at a gathering, having your palm read at a carnival, or simply reading your horoscope for fun. It doesn’t take much to open the door to the occult and bring a curse into your bloodline.
Three Branches of Occult: Witchcraft, Divination, and Sorcery.
Witchcraft – is the power branch
3 key words that expose the activity of witchcraft:
Manipulation, Intimidation, and Domination
Acupuncture, Astral-projection, Levitation, Marital Arts (Those that invoke supernatural spiritual powers), Para kinesis, Touch healing.
Divination- knowledge branch
Horoscope, Fortune telling, Hypnotism, Ouija Board, Crystal balls, Clairaudience
Sorcery – Material objects to impact physical senses.
Hallucinogenic Drugs & Certain Music, Amulets, ankhs (ankh is a cross with a ring at the top), charms, crystals (used for healing), horseshoes or rabbit tail for luck, and zodiac charms (Deuteronomy 18:10-13) and (Acts 19:18-19).
Kids-Certain toys - Pokémon toys & cards, 8 balls, chain letters, Harry Potter books, certain cartoons and TV shows, are introductions into the occult.
Unnatural or forbidden sex (Deuteronomy 27:20,21,22,23) this includes incest, bestiality, same sex, orgies, adultery, related by marriage). In Leviticus 18:22 God declares: “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination”
Adultery isn’t necessarily listed in this chapter, but marriage is a covenant, when we break covenant you bring a curse upon yourself
Disrespect for parents (Deuteronomy 27:16 AMP.) “Cursed is he who dishonors his father or his mother” and “Honor thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; that it may be will with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth (Ephesians 6:1-3).”
All forms of oppressions and injustice: Especially when directed against the weak and the helpless.
Murder of the innocent (Deuteronomy 27:25) “Cursed is he who takes a bribe to slay an innocent person.” (Gen 4:11) Cain after he killed Abel, God said, ”And now thou art cursed from the earth...” and “When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.”
When we look at murder we must remember that the Israelites did offer their children as sacrifice for fertility and a good harvest to the Canaanite priest. We must realize that abortion is also sacrificing the lives of innocent babies for personal benefit and will bring a curse.
Lawlessness: This final curse covered all forms of disobedience to the Law.
Other sins that provokes God’s curse:
Theft and perjury— destroys family and house (Zechariah 5:1-4).
Selfishness brings— insufficiency (Haggai 1:4-6).
Robbing God in tithe & offering brings lack and insufficiency (Malachi 3:8,9).
The above curses of robbing God can be removed from a curse of lack to blessings by repentance and restitution.
Resentment & Unforgiveness. When we choose not to forgive, Our Heavenly Father will send us to the tormentors (Matt. 18:34-35). If we have resentment and unforgiveness in our hearts, many of us are cursed with various infirmities.
Can a curse skip a generation? Yes, it can or the door can reopen to allow this curse, which may be dormant in a person to awake due to same sin or similar sin. Remember a curse goes to third or forth generation.
Why would it be dormant and why did it skip a generation? There are two possible reasons. One reason it could be dormant, because it was never revoked in the family bloodline. Second, this could be the fourth or fifth generation and no longer operative in the next generation.
How does a Christian revoke the curses? To be continued…
